Halotherapy or salt therapy is a complimentary treatment for a wide range of respiratory and dermatological conditions. The atmosphere in the treatment room is enriched with salt, replicating the micro-climate found in a salt mine or natural salt cave. The salt particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs where they reduce inflammation and inhibit bacterial growth. The salt acts in the same way on the skin through direct contact.
For about 200 years, Eastern Europeans have visited salt caves and salt mines to take advantage of these natural healing properties. This practice is called speleotherapy. In many countries in Eastern Europe, speleotherapy is an important part of respiratory and dermatological healthcare.
In the late 1980s, Russian researchers developed a technique to generate the atmosphere of a salt cave in a controlled environment with a machine called a halogenerator. This meant that patients no longer needed direct access to salt caves or salt mines to be treated. This form of the treatment became known as halotherapy.
Halotherapy has only recently been introduced in the UK. The first salt rooms in the UK opened in the late 2000s in London and South East England. The therapy has grown in popularity since then and the first salt room in Scotland opened in Edinburgh in 2011. In the same year, the NHS in England conducted a pilot study into halotherapy as a treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results of this study were enough for the NHS to endorse the therapy as a treatment for COPD.
